Remember when Black Friday signaled the official start of holiday shopping? Not anymore–the season now starts earlier and extends into January. Last year, 59% of retailers began promotions as early as September and retailers continued to offer deals beyond December 24, with post-Holiday clearance sales.

A new study found that 81% of female consumers say they frequently buy items they’ve seen and shared on social media and at least half of U.S. social media users say they get at least some #giftspiration from posts.

Each generation, from Boomers to Z, have a different outlook on health. Boomers don’t see themselves as aging—instead, they view themselves as evolving through life, Generation X takes a balanced, pragmatic approach, for Millennials, health and wellness is a lifestyle pursuit that’s inextricably woven into their lives. Finally, for today’s teens, health means more than just healthy eating and exercise, Gen Z takes a 360 view that includes making sure they are getting enough down time and creating balance in their lives. The news hasn’t been great for department stores. Sales have been consistently down since 2011 and there’s no relief in sight. Declining mall traffic, shifts in consumer spending, a sharp increase in e-commerce, and a trend toward value-oriented retailers have left both retailers and brands in a slump. Not yet! 80% of consumers say they still shopped in department stores in the last year.  While that’s down 8% since 2013, the overwhelming majority of shoppers still visit their favorite department stores at least occasionally…but is that enough to save the industry?
